JoyceDeWitt began her stage show at the age of 13. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Following that, while performing in summer productions she was convinced by the director to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA, she worked as a secretary up to her first appearance on television on an episode of Baretta.Contrary to reports that she was taught by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors never did meet. DeWitt's role as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run is her most well-known. She was part of the show's pilot and was eventually offered the role. Janet was also in an episode of the show The Ropers, which she appeared in 1979. DeWitt was the final actor to appear in the series' 1984 finale. She was then featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she was off acting for a number of years. The stage was her first time back on stage in the month of June in 1991 when she played a part in an episode of the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! A character based upon her, voiced and voiced by another actress, was in a 1997 episode on Pinky and the Brain. She was in the episode of Cybill. Her 2000s work includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
